Plate CCXI from The Birds of America (1827–1838), Audubon's life-size series where every bird was drawn from a freshly-prepared specimen. The Great Blue Heron stands alert in profile, neck coiled, watchful against a muted ground. Like the Snowy Owl, this plate lives at full scale — a reminder that in Audubon's era, field study meant killing first, painting second. The specificity of observation doesn't erase that fact.
