The Dance Class — Degas, framed
Edgar Degas's 1874 studio interior from Paris, taken from Wikimedia Commons' high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.
Painted in 1874, The Dance Class shows a ballet rehearsal in the Paris Opéra — dancers stretching and waiting, the aging instructor watching. Degas wasn't interested in the spectacle of performance; he was interested in the moment between moments. The composition is deliberately awkward — cropped, tilted, with figures cut off at the edges. He wanted the viewer to feel like they'd stumbled into a private space, not entered a carefully composed scene.
