Kunstformen Orchidae — Haeckel, framed
Ernst Haeckel's Orchidae plate from Kunstformen der Natur, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, framed and ready to hang.
Plate from Kunstformen der Natur, Haeckel's study of orchids arranges specimens across the page in the style of botanical illustration — but Haeckel was a zoologist, not a botanist. The orchids carry his eye for symmetry anyway. Every petal, every stamen is rendered with the same precision he applied to his famous medusae. The plate doesn't distinguish between beauty and science; in Haeckel's hands, they're the same thing.
