Kunstformen Trochilidae — Haeckel, framed
Ernst Haeckel's Trochilidae plate from Kunstformen der Natur, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, framed and ready to hang.
Plate from Kunstformen der Natur, Haeckel's study of hummingbirds — not a subject he'd normally study as a zoologist specializing in marine life, but the book was a survey of natural forms across all kingdoms. The hummingbirds are rendered as pure geometry: throat, wing, tail all compressed into compositional study. Haeckel approached every subject as a problem of form. The page becomes a grid of similar and variation.
