Gustav Klimt's 1907 portrait in gold and enamel, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1907 for the Vienna industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer's wife, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I is Klimt's most audacious use of metallic ornament. The figure emerges from an environment of pure pattern — dress and background dissolve into a field of gilt and enamel. There's no separation between person and decoration. The portrait asks: who is the subject, the woman or the gold.
