Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I — Gustav Klimt, poster
Gustav Klimt's 1907 portrait in gold and enamel, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, on archival fine art paper.
Painted in 1907 for the Vienna industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer's wife, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I is Klimt's most audacious use of metallic ornament. The figure emerges from an environment of pure pattern — dress and background dissolve into a field of gilt and enamel. There's no separation between person and decoration. The portrait asks: who is the subject, the woman or the gold.
