Kazimir Malevich's 1915 abstraction that ended representation, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, on archival fine art paper.
Painted in 1915 and first exhibited at The Last Futurist Exhibition 0,10 in Petrograd, Black Square is the founding work of Suprematism. A black square on a white ground — no figure, no horizon, no story. Malevich called it the "zero of form," and meant it. Modern abstraction begins here.
