Pineapple with Cockroaches (Metamorphosis Surinamensium) — Merian, framed
Maria Sibylla Merian's pineapple study from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, framed and ready to hang.
Plate from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (1705), Merian's landmark study of insect life cycles from Surinam. The pineapple occupies the centre of the composition, its fruit surrounded by the insects that inhabited it — cockroaches, parasites, predators all rendered with precise observation. Merian travelled to Surinam in her sixties, studied specimens in life, and created a book that was both art and science before the disciplines had fully separated. The pineapple is the stage; the insects are the drama.
