Impression Sunrise — Monet, poster
Claude Monet's 1872 port scene from Le Havre, taken from Wikimedia Commons' high-resolution scan, on archival fine art paper.
Painted in 1872 at the port of Le Havre, Impression, Sunrise shows Monet's hay-coloured sun rising through haze and water. A critic used the word "impression" mockingly to dismiss the painting, but Monet reclaimed it — and gave a name to an entire movement. The work doesn't describe the harbour; it captures the experience of watching light emerge from fog. No detail. Just atmosphere negotiating with form.
