Claude Monet's 1875 portrait of his wife Camille and son Jean, taken from the NGA's high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1875 on a hillside, Woman with a Parasol shows Monet's wife Camille and young son Jean in a meadow, sunlight streaming through the parasol. It's a domestic scene treated as pure light study — the grass rendered in bright greens and violets, the sky turbulent. Monet wasn't interested in the woman's expression; he was interested in how light fell on fabric, on grass, on skin. The human figures are almost secondary to the dance of illumination around them.
