Pimpernel — William Morris, poster
William Morris's 1876 indigo-discharge textile, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive, on archival fine art paper.
Designed in 1876, Pimpernel is Morris's first great success with the indigo-discharge technique — a method that requires hand-blocking on cotton, layer upon layer. The small flowers drift across a field of scrolling leaves, each element hand-registered to the next. Morris founded Morris & Co partly as a protest against mechanical production. Pimpernel is what that protest looks like: labour, intention, the refusal to let speed dictate beauty.
