Study for Bathers at Asnieres — Seurat, framed
Georges Seurat's 1883 compositional study, taken from Wikimedia Commons' CC0 archive, framed and ready to hang.
Painted in 1883 as the preparatory study for his monumental Bathers at Asnieres, this canvas shows Seurat working out the pose and placement of seven swimmers and loungers on the banks of the Seine. The brushwork is looser than the final painting will be — the colour applied directly, without the systematic pointillism of later works. It's the moment before the system takes hold, when gesture still matters. The Asnieres in the distance suggests this is a sketch from observation, then forgotten in the studio.
