Georges Seurat's 1891 pointillist performance scene, taken from Wikimedia Commons' high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1891, The Circus is Seurat's final work — and it remains unfinished. A circus ring, a white horse, acrobats in motion, spectators arranged in careful rows. The pointillist dots create a rhythm that mirrors the energy of performance. But the painting was never completed. We see it as Seurat left it, a moment frozen mid-stroke. There's something elegiac about an unfinished masterpiece — it suggests the artist reached for something and was interrupted.
