pierre-joseph redouté painted roses with such patient accuracy that botanists still use him as reference. born in the spanish netherlands, trained as a flower painter for marie antoinette, he survived the french revolution by becoming court artist to empress joséphine instead. les roses (1817–1824), painted at the gardens of malmaison, was the first scientific monograph on the rose and remains the most beautiful. two of its plates are in the catalog.
