Pierre-Joseph Redouté's Rosa Gallica Regalis from Les Roses, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, on archival fine art paper.

Plate from Les Roses, the Gallica rose — the "Royal Rose" of the medieval period, painted here by the artist who documented the entire Napoleonic rose garden at Malmaison. The petals are deep crimson, almost black in their depth; the stem carries thorns like calligraphy. Redouté painted with watercolour and stipple, a technique that allowed him to render the velvet texture of the petals. The rose was meant for the nose as much as the eye. His painting approximates both.
