Trouvelot
etienne léopold trouvelot was a french astronomer working at harvard who drew what telescopes couldn't yet photograph — the 1878 total eclipse, the great comet of 1881, the surface of mars, sunspots seen across decades. his pastels for the new york academy of sciences became the standard for popular astronomical illustration before photography caught up. he also accidentally introduced the gypsy moth to north america while attempting to breed silkworms in his medford garden. both things can be true. the astronomical drawings remain a quiet wonder.
