Total Eclipse 1878 — Trouvelot, framed
Étienne Léopold Trouvelot's 1878 astronomical pastel, taken from a public-domain archive, framed and ready to hang.
Drawn from observation during the total solar eclipse of 29 July 1878 at Creston, Wyoming — pastel on black paper, the medium Trouvelot insisted gave him better fidelity than photography of the era could. The corona, the prominences, the faint Baily's beads at the rim: every detail he saw at the eyepiece, transcribed by hand. NASA still uses Trouvelot's plates as a reference.
This is reproduced from a high-resolution public-domain archive scan, edge-trimmed to remove the publisher's title strip, printed on archival fine art paper and framed in solid wood.
