Plate VI from The Birds of America, the Wild Turkey — a mother with her young — occupies the page with domesticated grandeur. The adults' plumage moves with iridescent detail; the chicks scatter underfoot. Audubon opened the series with wild birds before they became tame, before the great herds were hunted to near-extinction. This plate carries the weight of that history: it's both a scientific record and a document of loss, made in an era when such duality could still seem invisible.
