Painted in 1874, the work shows a ballet rehearsal in the Paris Opéra. Degas wasn't interested in the spectacle of performance; he was interested in the moment between moments. The composition is deliberately awkward, cropped and tilted. He wanted the viewer to feel like they'd stumbled into a private space.
