Kunstformen Nudibranchia — Haeckel, framed
Ernst Haeckel's Nudibranchia plate from Kunstformen der Natur, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, framed and ready to hang.
Plate from Kunstformen der Natur, the sea slugs arranged in Haeckel's characteristic composition — floating across the page without horizon, without ground. The nudibranchs are soft-bodied, fragile, rendered here with the same attention he gave to the armoured radiolaria. The body becomes pure ornament: gills like feathers, tentacles like calligraphy. Haeckel saw decoration where taxonomy sees survival mechanism. Both views are true at once.
