Kunstformen Orchidae — Haeckel, poster
Ernst Haeckel's Orchidaceae from Kunstformen der Natur, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, on archival fine art paper.
Plate from Kunstformen der Natur, Haeckel's atlas of natural forms drawn from his Jena laboratory. The orchids are arranged with characteristic precision — the lipped, asymmetric flowers laid out in a grid of six, each one botanically accurate, the whole composition almost decorative. Haeckel believed the patterns of nature held a deeper symmetry; the orchid plate is one of his most quietly persuasive arguments.
