Ejiri in Suruga Province — Hokusai, framed
Katsushika Hokusai's c.1832 landscape from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, taken from Wikimedia Commons' CC0 archive, framed and ready to hang.
Block-printed in the early 1830s as part of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Ejiri in Suruga Province shows the mountain tiny in the distance while wind-swept grass dominates the foreground. Hokusai uses scale to play with perception — the near is always more vivid than the far. The traveller on the road is almost weightless against the rhythm of the vegetation.
