Katsushika Hokusai's 1831 ukiyo-e icon, taken from the Art Institute of Chicago's CC0 high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.
Block-printed in Edo around 1831 as part of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave off Kanagawa shows three fishing boats holding under a wave that's been bigger than Japan ever since. When the print reached Paris in the 1860s, the Western art world rearranged itself around it. The composition still pulls.
This is reproduced from the Art Institute of Chicago's CC0 open-access scan at full resolution, printed on archival fine art paper and framed in solid wood.
