Viennese Cafe The Chess Players (1911) — Moriz Jung, framed
Moriz Jung's 1911 postcard design for the Wiener Werkstätte, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.
The Chess Players shows two figures bent over their game, the composition organized around the board's geometry. Jung simplifies the figures to silhouettes, letting their action describe the scene. The Werkstätte postcards were collected obsessively by Viennese culture enthusiasts — they understood that a postcard could be art, that limitation of format was an invitation to greater refinement.
