Indianer auf Pferden — August Macke, framed
August Macke's 1911 horsemen study, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.
Painted in 1911, Indianer auf Pferden channels the Romantic fascination with frontier imagery while maintaining Macke's sophisticated colour theory. The landscape — orange and purple and green — carries as much weight as the figures. There's no narrative settling here, no Western story; instead, horses and riders dissolve into the composition's geometry. It's Macke's version of movement, stillness rendered kinetic through colour alone.
