Three Girls in Yellow Straw Hats — August Macke, framed
August Macke's 1913 colour study of three women, taken from Google Art Project CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.
Painted in 1913 as part of the Blaue Reiter circle in Munich, Three Girls in Yellow Straw Hats glows with the colour theory that Macke and Marc had absorbed from Kandinsky. Three figures in yellow against a fading landscape, simplified to essential planes. By 1914, Macke was dead in the war — 27 years old. The Blaue Reiter lost most of its painters in the next four years. This painting survives them.
