August Macke's 1913 double portrait in oil and colour, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1913, Zwei Maedchen shows two young women side by side against a fractured landscape of Expressionist colour. The title in German preserves Macke's own naming — Maedchen, not ladies or women. These are girls caught between figuration and abstraction, rendered in planes of pure colour that flatten the space. The work belongs to Macke's final flourishing before the war ended the Blaue Reiter entirely.
