Édouard Manet's 1882 mirror scene from Paris, taken from Wikimedia Commons' high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1882, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère is Manet's final major work — a barmaid stands behind the counter, the room reflected in a mirror behind her. The perspective is impossible; the reflection doesn't match what should be reflected. But Manet wasn't trying to render space accurately. He was trying to render the feeling of being in that space — fractured, incomplete, looking at and away simultaneously. The barmaid's face is distant. She's present but untouchable.
