John Singer Sargent's 1885 lamp-lit garden study, taken from Google Art Project CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1885 in the English Cotswolds, Carnation Lily Lily Rose captures the moment dusk settles and the Japanese lanterns begin to glow. Two young girls (Sargent's friends' daughters) tend the flowers by lamplight, their faces cool, the setting almost theatrical. Sargent was the most technically brilliant portraitist of his time, but he wanted this painting to be about light and air, not likeness. The composition feels candid, the atmosphere precise. He painted what Impressionism had opened up: colour seen through time of day, the particular light of the hour.
