Seated Woman with Bent Knee — Schiele, framed
Egon Schiele's 1917 figure study, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 scan, framed and ready to hang.
Drawn in 1917, just a year before Schiele died of Spanish flu at 28, Seated Woman with Bent Knee demonstrates the raw power of his line. His work was repeatedly censored for "obscenity" — he served time in prison for it. The figure is contorted, uncomfortable, real. No idealization, no refuge in beauty. The body here is a fact, unsentimental. What survives Schiele's early death is this refusal to look away.
