Papillons Plate 19 — E A Seguy, framed
E. A. Séguy's Papillons Plate 19 from Papillons, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive scan, framed and ready to hang.
Plate 19 from Papillons, nearing the end of the series — butterflies in full colour spread, wings open and alert. The specimens vary in size and colour; some are bold, others subtle. Séguy's approach across all 200-plus plates was to treat each butterfly as a complete object, never a fragment. The page accommodates the whole creature. By plate 19, Séguy had refined his language to near abstraction: each butterfly is itself, and also a pattern on the page.
