Plate 8 from Papillons, a tighter composition of butterflies in Séguy's Art Deco language — fewer specimens, more space between them, almost austere. The butterflies' wings are rendered with subtle colour gradations; some are pale, others deep. Séguy worked in the 1920s, at the intersection of modernism and natural history illustration. This plate shows that intersection most clearly: form and colour matter equally; the specimen and the design are one object.
