Georges Seurat's 1890 cabaret scene in pointillist technique, taken from Wikimedia Commons' high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in 1890, Le Chahut shows the can-can dancers of Montmartre in their high-kicking rhythm — legs pointing outward, arms raised, bodies in synchronized motion. Seurat rendered the energy of movement through the regularity of his dots, which somehow makes the chaos more ordered, the chaos more precise. The painting is about pattern and repetition and the strange beauty of human bodies in unison. The dancers' faces are almost forgotten; their bodies are the subject.
