Vincent van Gogh's 1890 blossoming almond branch, taken from Wikimedia Commons' Google Art Project scan, on archival fine art paper.
Painted in February 1890 to celebrate the birth of his brother Theo's son, Almond Blossom is the most Japanese of van Gogh's works — a single limb against void, pale pink flowers against a blue field. There's a tenderness here that survives the restlessness. He was thinking of new life when he painted it. The branch doesn't apologize for being alone.
