Vincent van Gogh's 1889 study of cypress trees from Saint-Rémy, taken from the Met's CC0 high-resolution scan, on archival fine art paper.

Painted in July 1889, Cypresses is van Gogh's vertical complement to his wheat fields — the tree as pure form, rising from a landscape that pulls sideways. Dark greens moving in swirls, the sky behind almost violent with attention. Van Gogh told his brother Theo the cypress was neglected by painters, that it deserved study. He made five paintings that summer to prove it.

This is reproduced from the Met's CC0 open-access scan at full resolution, printed on archival fine art paper, ready to hang.
