Vincent van Gogh's 1887 Paris-period sunflower study, taken from the Met's CC0 high-resolution scan, framed and ready to hang.

Painted in Paris in summer 1887 — two years before the more famous Arles sunflowers — this is the early sunflower study where van Gogh first worked out the language. Four cut blooms laid against a turquoise ground, the petals already turning to thick paint, the seeds rendered with the same attention as a portrait's eyes. Most people associate sunflowers with the Arles bouquets in vases. This one is quieter, and arguably more honest.

This is reproduced from the Met's CC0 open-access scan at full resolution, printed on archival fine art paper and framed in solid wood.
