The Milkmaid — Johannes Vermeer, poster
Johannes Vermeer's c.1660 domestic interior from Amsterdam, taken from Wikimedia Commons' Google Art Project scan, on archival fine art paper.
Painted around 1660, The Milkmaid stops time in a servant's kitchen. A young woman pours milk from a pitcher into a bowl — that's all. But Vermeer gave it the compositional weight of a religious scene. The light from the left window is almost tactile. The folds of her sleeves are negotiated with the same care as the Virgin's in an Annunciation. Work deserves that attention.
