James Abbott McNeill Whistler's 1874 nocturne study, taken from Wikimedia Commons CC0 archive, framed and ready to hang.

Nocturne in Black and Gold (1874) shows fireworks reflected in the Thames — Whistler's nightscape where colour contracts to a whisper. He believed in music first, representation second; the painting is titled like a musical composition. The fireworks are barely present, just luminous marks against darkness. Whistler proved that a painting doesn't need to show everything to show something essential. The restraint is the whole point.
